Hello all,
The Colorado Rocky Mountain Adventure is off to a great start! After meeting up with the campers and stopping for some sandwiches, we've landed at the Green Ridge Campground outside of Grand Lake, CO. Ideally located on the Colorado River, coming out of Shadow Mountain Reservoir, campers will have the opportunity to fish the heavy evening hatches for some trophy trout here. After arriving, we made sure everyone got set up and unpacked alright. We then had a quick meeting to go over some basic group rules and then got to setting up our rods.
We'll start tomorrow morning with a thorough fly fishing seminar to learn the skills to be able to fish independently. For guys that haven't fished before, we'll cover some key knots, some basic casting, a bit about how to read water, and how to handle and safely release fish. For those in the group that have fly fished before, we'll dig into more advanced casting and fly setups. We'll then swing by a local fly store in Grand Lake before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park for the first time. We'll spend the day fishing the Kawuneechee Valley for brook trout. We will finish off the day at our campsite, fishing the evening hatch, before discussing the plans for our 2 night backcountry trip up the East Inlet Trail of the Colorado River. On this excursion, we will be targeting brook trout and native Colorado river cutthroat trout in a mixture of small mountain streams and alpine lakes. Wish us luck and we will talk to you when we make it out of the backcountry in a few days!
Until next time,
Jack, Remi, Max, and the crew
