Colorado Adventure I - update 1

Hello!

The first LFFE trip of the year has started! We’re so excited to kick the season off with another great Colorado adventure. The team picked campers up from the airport, loaded up the van, and took off for the mountains. Our first campsite is located in the town of Granby, Colorado, along the Colorado river. We resisted the urge to start fishing upon arrival and got ourselves organized and prepared for the week ahead. After that we established expectations for the trip, talked about what we wanted to accomplish on this trip in regard to both fishing and personal growth, and finally gave campers an idea of how our week would look. The group made camp, cooked dinner, did a lot of talking, and played some Spikeball.

Tomorrow, we’ll get an early start and get to fishing. Our first fishing seminar is geared toward teaching campers the basics of fly fishing, so that they’ll be able to fish independently going forward. We’ll go over some essential knots, casting, setting the hook, how to find trout in rivers, and how to handle and remove the hook from fish safely. After that, we’ll get prepped for our backcountry leg of the trip.

We’ll be headed into the Tonahutu Creek backcountry where we’ll mostly be fishing for wild brook trout. We’re expecting to see amazing dry-fly fishing in the evenings, with more nymph-based rigs earlier in the day. After catching tons of awesome fish and eating some quality meals, we will hike out to our campsite in Grand Lake, CO where the campers will have the opportunity to shower, get laundry done, and recharge their batteries before moving into the next leg of the trip. So far we’ve had an awesome start to the trip and can’t wait for the rest!

The guys are all sitting around camp, getting to know each other. They're clearly tired from the day of travel, but they're also full of energy. We're excited about this group -- seems like a great group of guys.

Colorado leadership team

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,

Will Lillard signature
