Hello from sunny Colorado!
We met up with the crew at the airport earlier today and headed to our first campsite outside of Granby, Colorado. The site is right along the Colorado River, and about 30 minutes from the trailhead where we will depart for the backcountry in two days. Before we could get to fishing, we got to know each other and discuss the plan for the week. After that, we'll go over some LFFE ground rules, talk about our individual goals and goals for the group, and eat some burgers and s'mores from the campfire. The guys are full of energy, but after a long day of travel, they'll likely be heading to their tents before too long.
Tomorrow we’ll chef up some blueberry pancakes for breakfast, and get to our first fishing lesson. We’ll get everyone acquainted with the essential knots and rod rigging techniques for fly fishing, do a casting seminar, go over how to properly fight and land a fish, and then handle and release them safely with safely returning the fish to its water always in mind. Once everyone is ready, we’ll head up the road to fish Willow Creek in search of big brook, rainbow, and brown trout! With a combination of dry flys and nymphs, we'll land some fish for sure.
We’ll close tomorrow out with backcountry prep by splitting up gear and food and demonstrating how to pack our bags for the hike. The backcountry portion of the trip should see tons of fish, some amazing wildlife including moose and elk, and stunning views. We’ll be fishing Tonahutu Creek, a small stream that snakes through alpine meadows and eventually feeds into Grand Lake. Countless brook trout call this scenic stream home – it should make for some memorable fishing!
All in all, we’re thrilled to start this Colorado Adventure, we have a great group of guys and can’t wait to make some memories this week!
