Colarado Adventure I - update 3

Hello Families!

Our Colorado Adventure wrapped up today and everyone's on their way back home. Since our last trip update, we headed west toward the town of Kremmling, Colorado to fish a gorgeous section of the Colorado River along Pumphouse campground. The guys battled adverse weather and less than ideal fishing conditions to land some amazing fish. It was cool to see them persevere -- earlier in the trip, they may have been less inclined to stick it out. But after discovering they're tougher than maybe they thought, they stayed at it and caught great fish.

After setting up camp there, we picked up trash around the campground– doing more than our part to leave no trace. We explained to the group how delicate the Colorado River system is, being named America’s most endangered river. We then headed upstream of our campsite to fish scenic Gore Canyon. Spring runoff meant that water was high, off color, and cold–making for some more difficult fishing compared to the backcountry portion of our trip. Regardless of this, many campers were able to figure it out and land some massive brown and rainbow trout, up to 18 inches!

Friday was our last full day together, and it’s safe to say we went out with a bang! The group started the day with a half day float trip with guides from Cutthroat Anglers down the Colorado and landed some amazing fish, with several campers landing fish in the 17”-18” range. After the float we had lunch, and hit the road towards our last campsite near Silverthorne. Once in town, we went to the rec center to swim, play basketball, and shower, and had our final banquet dinner where we reflected on our time here and talked about our favorite parts of the trip.

This was a great trip full of amazing memories! Tons of fish were landed, fun was had, and friends were made. It was never a long trip to begin with, but it sure flew by. Thank you for sharing your great kids with us -- we loved getting to know them and share in the joy that is catching fish on a fly and sleeping under the stars. Until next summer!

Signing off,

Hunter, Hutch, Riley, and the guys

Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions was started in 2010 as a graduate thesis for my Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU. The operating premise was simple - by coupling amazing wilderness fly fishing camps for teens with environmental education and service learning we can help inspire future generations of fly fishing conservationists. We have been growing our unique list of trips and experiences ever since.

When it comes to choosing a summer program for your teen the options are endless. For the teen who loves to fish, be outside, and has a strong sense of adventure we have made the choice easy. We are the leader in teen fly fishing adventures and are dedicated to providing the best backcountry fly fishing experience with opportunities for teens to engage in leadership training, community service, and backcountry camping.

Sincerely,
