We usually ask friend of LFFE and Orvis NYC fly fishing manager, Rob Ceccarini, for help with our holiday gift guide. This year we decided to ask someone with a behind the scene perspective of our programs. Morgan Krell is a senior in high school living in NYC. In addition to being a two-time LFFE alum, he is a sales associate at the NYC Orvis store, and his love for fly fishing has been highlighted on the Orvis Blog several times. He has put together a list of his five favorite gifts for the fly fisherman in your life ranging from $-$$$$.
$-Smith Creek Rod Clip- Morgan loves fishing mouse flies for large trout. He writes “I use it to hold a 2nd rod on the river for mousing but it is also great to just keep your gear out of the dirt. You don’t want anything getting clogged up or dropped/ stepped on in the backcountry.” Morgan
$$- Hydros or Hydros HD fly line – “A fly line is often overlooked when compared to the rod and the fly but it can make all the difference. A fresh line can ramp up your fishing, especially if you are using dry flies because older lines tend to sink. For all-around trout fishing applications, a weight forward trout line is the way to go.” Morgan
$$$- Orvis Fly Tying Kit- “A great way to start tying your own flies with no useless materials. Teaches you the techniques for any trout fly. If you take the free fly tying 101 class at Orvis you get a discount. If you need something to do all winter, fly tying is the answer.” Morgan
$$$$- New Orvis Men’s Ultralight Wading Jacket – “In my opinion, the single most important piece of clothing on a Lillard trip is a raincoat. On a 10-20 day trip rain is inevitable. You want to be able to fish in a storm (as long as there is no lightning). Spots for tools and large pockets make it extra functional. The rubber cuffs are awesome when landing fish in the cold.” Morgan
